Resolutions
“I made no resolutions for the New Year.
The habit of making plans, of criticizing,
sanctioning and molding my life,
is too much of a daily event for me.

First and foremost, I love how you can time my blog posts right along with how busy my life might be at the time. No posts, no time. I definitely need to work on that because all work and no blogging makes for an unbalanced mommy.
So, it's New Year's Eve and in perfect mom of the year fashion, I thought maybe I should make some resolutions. Therefore, I got out my trusty pen and a notepad and went straight to work. Yep! That's as far as I got.
Sure, I could put down to exercise more. Drink less Starbucks. Work less and play more. I could do all of those things. However, aren't resolutions, when intended to make us better, really just tiny boxes we try to fit ourselves into? In my experience, no matter how flexible you are, you never seem to really fit in that box. This year, I've taken the road less traveled (gosh I love that poem) and will be making no resolutions.
My endless pursuit for mom of the year began with my need to fit in a box. The image of a pristine, very white box, where there is no dirt, no screaming children, and everyone farts rainbows. That's just not reality. In fact, I was reminded this week how pristine boxes just simply don't exist. However, mine just might be in better shape than I expected. I prefer to say I'm like one of those Christmas present boxes that has been used for a few years in a row. It has marks where the tape has been ripped off and might have a few holes and no longer be a perfect rectangle, but it serves its purpose.
Instead, this year I resolve to count my blessings - I refer to them as dad of the year, daughter of the year #1 and daughter of the year #2. I'm so very lucky to have their love and support, no matter what size, shape or color of my box.
This year, if you're the resolution type, I encourage you to resolve to accept yourself just the way you are. I have and I find I rather like it that way. Now, don't worry! I am the competitive type, so I'll continue on my endless pursuit for mom of the year. Besides, I really like shiny objects.
