Coolest Mom
The problem with children is that
you have to put up with their parents.

Earlier this summer, I decided to try a new hairstyle. Well, it wasn't so much a new hairstyle versus a new hair color. It all started with Pinterest. I was browsing through hairstyles and came upon one that was edgy, modern, sleek, sexy and completely not me. I re-pinned it thinking someday I may have the courage to do this.
On my next visit to hairdresser of the year, I showed her the photo, rather embarrassed like I was some middle school girl showing her the latest movie star's photo, asking for the impossible feat of looking "just like them." Come on, I was smart enough to know I could NEVER pull off the Rachel so I didn't even ask! But, I love my hairdresser so much I have followed her to different salons for about 7 years. When you find someone you trust, you find someone you trust. She gently explained to me that the style I had pinned was a bit different from my hair, mainly that it had bangs. Since I haven't had bangs since about 6th grade, I knew this wasn't for me. Being the great hairdresser she is, she made several suggestions and we agreed that on my next visit, we'd go for broke. She assured me the end result would be close, but slightly different.
She started gently and has progressed me to a brighter color each time. I now sport bright red highlights under very dark brown hair. It is definitely edgy, slightly unlike me yet, in this new hairstyle I've realized that my hairdresser may know me better than I thought. As she said, this hairstyle is subtle with hints of bad ass poking through.
What I didn't expect is how this new hairstyle would bring me to something I had long been chasing. You see, I went to pick up daughter of the year #1 after school and when I walked in, I was transformed to a place I'd never been before. Daughter of the year #1's friends gathered round to get a closer look at my hair and as we left the room, I overheard two little girls whispering to her, "Your mom is so cool!" As she linked her arm in mine, I'd like to say we strutted out of the room but it was probably more just making sure not to trip. Who knew, after all this time chasing mom of the year, the coolest mom was so within my grasp.
While I sport this new found confidence in being the coolest mom, I may revel in this for just a bit. I won't lie. It did dawn on me. If coolest mom is this easy, maybe I am just one pin away from mom of the year. Guess I'd better get to pinning!
