Reason #179: Even People in Walmart Think I'm Uncool
Love is the condition in which the happiness of
another person is essential to your own.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Honestly, I used to be a hopeless romantic, but married someone I wouldn't consider overly romantic. I'm going to blame that one on his father. So, it goes without saying that I was shocked with this beautiful delivery of flowers to my office today. Thanks honey!
My overt need for practicality did not go unnoticed - especially at Walmart. I took Maddie there yesterday to spend some birthday money that was burning a hole in her pocket. After selecting a new DS game, we went to the Valentine's section. Maddie had already done Valentine's for her class at school, but she was allowed to take them to her afterschool program as well. I honestly just couldn't send her with nothing. So, as we walked the aisles, I tried to think of a practical gift that would not cost too much. Honestly, I hate those packs of Valentine's you find at the store. They are crap and half the time the stickers they come with stick to nothing! I just couldn't bring myself to buy another package.
I finally spotted a pack of Valentine's pencils. This is it, I thought. A pack of 12 so I would only have to buy three of them. And they were only a dollar! Bonus!! I showed them to Maddie, my very own owner of at least 24 different types of pencils she has received as gifts. I didn't get the reaction I expected.
"No, mom. I don't want to get pencils," she said. "I want to get Hersey's kisses."
Seeing that the kisses were sold out, I attempted to sway her back to the pencils. "But Maddie, these are so cool, I think we should do these."
After some back and forth discussing, that I didn't realize was overheard by others (nor who would really care to listen to that), a man walked into my sight, looked right at me and said, "Yeah mom, pencils are so uncool." Oh, he had no idea!
Before I could even stop myself, I said, "Oh, considering I'm worthy of the most uncool mom in the world award, you have no idea. After all, it is my goal in life to embarrass my children." Whoa! Where did that come from? Good thing he found it humorous.
So, going into this Valentine's Day, it's good to know that my endless pursuit for mom of the year is finally being recognized by others. Apparently, buying pencils for a Valentine's present moves you right into the pole position. Sheesh!
